Bemisgeret is a picture framing studio and art gallery at 29 Derech Beit Lehem in Baka, Jerusalem. It is a family business run by Mordechai (Mouki) Cohen and the painter Esther (Eti) Agasi Cohen. Mouki does the framing work and handles the technical side, while Eti is in charge of design and advises customers. The studio frames pictures and paintings in wood, restores artwork and frames and makes custom mirrors, and the gallery sells original paintings and lithographs by Israeli artists. Esther is the gallery's house artist and most of the paintings are hers, alongside work by other local artists.
Meet Eti and Mouki
Eti (Esther Agasi Cohen)
Painter and graphic designer
Eti looks after design and advises our customers. For 22 years she was the in-house designer at the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation, and today she is also the gallery's own artist and leads creative-release workshops.
Mouki does the framing work and the technical side, and builds every frame by hand. Before the studio he worked at a timber import and manufacturing plant and restored antique furniture in his spare time.
Our studio is in the heart of Baka, in an old Jerusalem stone building from the last century. It's a small workshop and a family business, where we frame pictures and keep a little shop of art and vintage pieces that's hard to leave. Everything is made by hand, from fine materials, by two people who love the craft. This is where you'll meet me and my partner, Mouki, happy to take on any project or challenge you bring us.
What we did before the studio
Our love affair with framing and art began many years earlier, long before we dared to dream of a studio of our own. We were both employees back then. Mouki worked at a timber import and manufacturing plant, and in his spare time he restored antique furniture and took apart and rebuilt whatever came into his hands. I spent 22 years as the in-house designer at the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation, where I did graphic design and many print productions, met a lot of artists, and came to know Israeli and Jewish art from all over the world.
How we bought a framing business on Derech Beit Lehem
A little after we turned 50, and after a lot of soul-searching, we decided to make an old dream come true. We bought a small picture framing business on Derech Beit Lehem in Baka, Jerusalem. Mouki threw himself into learning the trade with all its secrets and difficulties, and I helped however I could. We jumped in at the deep end and loved every minute...
We learned on the go, with hard work and a lot of patience, and people in the area got to know us and our work and trusted us with their art treasures. The shop became a Jerusalem institution and an open house for customers, designers and local artists.
The studio and gallery in Baka today
The neighborhood noticed the sudden change too. Out of nowhere there was a gallery with a Provençal look and a bright, ever-changing shop window full of original work by local artists. Baskets and carts lined the sidewalk on Derech Beit Lehem, filled with our colorful frames, mirrors, handmade pieces and vintage finds...
A dream, an opportunity and some talent turned the place into a little gem and a home for art and art lovers of all ages, in Jerusalem and beyond. Today we both work in the studio. Mouki is in charge of the making and the technical side, and I look after the visual side, the design and the organizing. Here you'll find creative framing that thinks outside the frame, next to original artwork, lithographs and prints, and plenty of unusual gifts and objects. Our customers run from the young and the young at heart to grandparents, and we welcome them all, from couples decorating their first home, kids who paint and parents proud of their pictures, to art lovers and professional artists, interior designers, and well-known artists framing an exhibition. We make a point of giving every person personal, professional attention that fits their taste and what makes them who they are.
You're all welcome to drop by. We'd love to see you at the studio, 29 Derech Beit Lehem, Baka, Jerusalem.
