Made to measure, in solid wood frames

Custom mirrors in Jerusalem, made to measure in wood frames

At our studio in Baka, Jerusalem, we make custom mirrors, each one to measure and in a solid wood frame. Bring the wall measurements and a photo of the room. You choose the frame profile and color here, from the same selection we use for framing pictures.

A custom mirror is one you order to fit your wall and choose a frame for, instead of buying a stock size off the shelf. At Bemisgeret, 29 Derech Beit Lehem in Baka, Jerusalem, Mordechai (Mouki) Cohen and the painter Esther (Eti) Agasi Cohen make rectangular and square mirrors from Belgian mirror glass, in solid wood frames in a range of profiles and colors. Some of the profiles are made in Israel and some are imported from Italy.

What a custom mirror means at our studio

A custom mirror is ordered to the size of your wall, with a frame you choose, so you aren't stuck with whatever sizes the store has on the shelf. With us it goes through the same steps as a picture that comes in for framing. We measure the wall, you pick a profile and color from the samples, and Mouki makes the mirror in the studio.

Our mirrors are rectangular or square, and all of them have wood frames. We don't make round mirrors or frameless mirrors, and we don't carry plastic frames either. Better to know that before you call.

We also repair and restore existing mirror frames, including gilding, as part of our restoration and repair service. That's for anyone with an old mirror at home whose frame has cracked or faded. For the mirror glass itself, check with us first, with a photo on WhatsApp or at the studio.

Mirrors with solid wood frames: profiles and colors

A solid wood mirror frame is a wood profile that runs around all four sides of the mirror, and it decides how the mirror looks on the wall. You choose it from the selection we use for custom picture framing, which includes modern, classic and decorative profiles. Some are made in Israel and some are imported from Italy.

Most of the difference between a designer mirror and an ordinary one is the frame, so choose it in front of the samples themselves rather than from a photo on your phone. A rule of thumb that works in most cases is that a large mirror can take a wide profile, while a small mirror needs a narrow one so there's enough mirror left to look into.

If there are framed pictures in the same room, we can match the mirror frame to theirs, since everything is made in the same studio.

Decorative profiles

Profiles with patterns and grooves. They suit a mirror that's meant to be the focal point of the room, such as one over a chest of drawers in the entryway.

Gilded and painted profiles

Finished in gold, silver or color. A gilded frame suits a classic room with antique furniture or a high ceiling.

Slim profiles

A clean line for a modern room, and for a large mirror you don't want weighing down the wall.

Wide profiles

A wide profile makes the mirror the centerpiece of the room. It needs a mirror large enough for it and a wall with space around it.

Dark or light wood

Dark wood makes the mirror stand out on a light wall. Light or white wood almost disappears into the wall, so what you mostly see is the reflection. If the room has wood floors or wooden furniture, we'll match the color to them.

Belgian mirror glass for a clear reflection

In Israel, "Belgian mirror" is the usual name for good-quality mirror glass with a clean reflection. We use Belgian mirror glass in every mirror we make, whatever the size or profile. The frame is what you notice first when you walk into the room, but you look into the mirror every day, so we're careful about the glass.

Which mirror suits which room

The room the mirror hangs in determines its size and orientation, and often the frame too. A mirror facing a window, or at right angles to it, bounces daylight back into the room. A mirror facing a strong lamp or the TV is less comfortable, because of the glare.

Entryway mirror

An entryway mirror is usually a tall one, so you can check yourself head to toe on the way out. In a narrow entrance it also makes the space feel bigger. Measure the free wall next to the door, because with a coat rack on one side and the electrical panel on the other, store sizes usually don't fit.

Living room mirror

A living room mirror usually hangs horizontally, over a sofa or a sideboard. Here the frame counts as much as the mirror, and we can match it to the frames of the pictures on the same wall.

Bedroom mirror

A bedroom mirror is usually a tall full-length mirror beside the closet, or a mirror over a dresser. Check what it will reflect from the bed before you decide where it goes.

Bathroom mirror

Wood and humidity don't always get along. If the mirror is for a bathroom or another damp room, tell us in advance. We'll work out together whether it's a good idea and which profile to use.

How to measure your wall for a made-to-measure mirror

A made-to-measure mirror starts with measuring the wall, and the size that counts is the outside size (the mirror together with its frame), because that's the space it will take up. Measure the width and height of the free space and note what limits it on each side.

Before you order, mark the rectangle on the wall with masking tape and leave it there for a few days. That way you'll see if the size is too big or too small while there's still time to change it.

What to bring to the studio

  • Measurements: The width and height of the free space on the wall, in centimeters.
  • Obstacles: Outlets, switches, baseboards, a door frame or an air conditioner nearby.
  • A photo of the space: A daylight photo of the wall and the room that shows the wall color and the floor.
  • A color sample: A drawer, a shelf, a piece of flooring or a framed picture from the same room, if you have one.

Custom mirrors for interior designers and projects

A mirror for a design project is ordered to the measurements in the plan and the colors already chosen for the home. We work with interior designers and architects. You can come to the studio with or without your clients, bring samples of the flooring or the cabinetry, and choose a profile against the actual materials.

We frame pictures in the same place, so you can choose the mirrors and the picture frames for a home in one visit and match them to each other. If you're also looking for a piece for the opposite wall, you'll find one in our art gallery, and the rest of what we do is on the studio services page.

How much a custom mirror costs

The price of a made-to-measure mirror depends on the size of the mirror and the profile you choose. A slim, smooth profile costs less than a wide or gilded one, so the price range is wide. You can get a quote at the studio or by phone at 02-6714005. You can also message us on WhatsApp or by email, and for a quote all we need is the measurements and a rough idea of the frame.

The studio is at 29 Derech Beit Lehem in Baka, close to the German Colony and Talpiot. Our phone numbers and opening hours are on the studio contact page.

How to order a made-to-measure mirror

  1. Measure the wall

Measure the width and height of the free space and take photos of the wall and the room. If an outlet or a switch limits the size, note that down too.

  2. Choose a profile and color at the studio

We set a few profile samples side by side and compare them with the photo of the room and any samples you brought. Eti helps you choose.

  3. Get a quote

Once we have the size and the profile, we give you a price and tell you when the mirror will be ready.

  4. Making and pickup

Mouki makes the mirror and you collect it from the studio at 29 Derech Beit Lehem. For a large mirror, come in a car with room to spare, and an old blanket won't hurt.

Frequently asked questions about custom mirrors

How much does a custom mirror cost in Jerusalem?

The price of a made-to-measure mirror depends on its size and the wood profile you choose, so there's no single price. A slim, smooth profile costs less than a wide or gilded one, and the price range is wide. You can get a quote at the studio at 29 Derech Beit Lehem in Jerusalem, by phone at 02-6714005, on WhatsApp at 052-5413669 or by email. Just send the measurements and a photo of a frame you like.

Can I order a round mirror or a frameless mirror?

No. We only make rectangular or square mirrors, and every mirror leaves the studio in a wood frame. Round mirrors, frameless mirrors and plastic frames aren't part of what we do. Within those limits there's plenty of choice. The size is set by your wall, and you choose the frame from a wide selection of wood profiles in a range of colors or with gold and silver finishes.

What is a Belgian mirror?

In Israel, "Belgian mirror" is the common name for good-quality mirror glass with a clean reflection. People use the term to tell a good mirror apart from a basic one. At Bemisgeret in Jerusalem we use Belgian mirror glass in every made-to-measure mirror, paired with a solid wood frame you choose from our range of profiles.

How do I measure a wall for a mirror?

Measure the width and height of the free space on the wall in centimeters, and decide how much of it the mirror will take up, frame included. Watch for outlets and switches that limit the size. Mark the rectangle on the wall with masking tape and leave it up for a few days before you order. Bring the measurements and a photo of the room to the studio, and we'll help you decide on the final size.

Can you match the mirror frame to my furniture or the pictures I already have?

Yes. We frame mirrors and pictures in the same studio from the same range of profiles, so you can give the mirror the same profile as the pictures on the wall, or one close to it. To match furniture, bring a color sample, such as a drawer or a shelf. A good daylight photo helps too. An exact match to the color of existing furniture isn't always possible, and then we'll suggest the closest color or a deliberate contrast.

How long does it take to make a custom mirror?

We give you the lead time when you order, along with the quote. It varies from order to order, so we don't publish a fixed number. If the mirror has to be ready by a certain date, like a move or the end of a renovation, tell us on the first call and we'll let you know if that's possible. You pick up the mirror from the studio at 29 Derech Beit Lehem in Baka.

Can I order a mirror by phone, or do I have to come to the studio?

You can order and get a quote by phone at 02-6714005 or by email, if you send us the measurements and a photo of the space. The profile is better chosen at the studio, because wood tones and gold finishes look different on a screen than in person. The studio at 29 Derech Beit Lehem in Baka is open Sunday to Thursday 9:30 am to 6 pm and Friday until 1:30 pm. If you have questions about hanging the mirror at home, ask us by phone.

Art Gallery

Our gallery, inside the framing studio in Baka, has original paintings by Israeli artists. Most of what you'll see are oil paintings by Esther Agasi Cohen, the house artist and Mouki's partner, alongside lithographs by great artists such as Nachum Gutman, Moshe Castel, Yehudit Yellin and Yosl Bergner. There are also canvas prints by Esther, which she finishes with touches of paint (giclée), and limited-edition serigraphs on wood by Adriana Nave. An online catalog is in the works, so for now you see the work at the studio itself. Some pieces are already framed, and the rest can be framed on site.
